Pakistan’s former Premier arrested
Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was arrested by a 12-member National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team on Thursday in a multi-billion-rupee case related to the award of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import contract.
When he was arrested, Abbasi was on his way to attend a press conference, accompanied by his party leaders. Abbasi initially resisted the arrest but eventually conceded.
As per the arrest warrant, the PM is accused of commission of the offense of corruption and corrupt practices. Abbasi is a key leader of Pakistan Muslim League led by former premier Mian Nawaz Sharif who is already languishing in jail on graft charges. Abbasi had assumed as PM after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified and arrested under court order.
