South Korea’s industry ministry said Wednesday it will take active steps to lead the standardization of technologies in hydrogen power generation in line with the new energy vision the government announced in January. Under the plan, South Korea will make efforts to lead standardization of 15 hydrogen-related technologies by 2030, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy said. The vision came after the government announced a blueprint based on what it calls the hydrogen economy in January. The blueprint aims to build a society that uses hydrogen as the main source of energy for power generation and daily use. The agency plans to suggest eight technologies for standardization to the international community, covering fields of the mobility industry, such as drones, vessels, and heavy machinery.

South Korea will also propose four standards in the field of energy generation, along with three more in the supply and measuring hydrogen, the ministry added. Through such efforts, the ministry said South Korea will become one of the world’s leading countries in terms of competitiveness for hydrogen technologies by 2030, along with the United States, Japan, and Germany. By playing a bigger role in the standardization of hydrogen technologies, the ministry said South Korea will be able to speed up efforts to build a hydrogen industry ecosystem in the country.

“South Korea will have an opportunity to expand its presence in the global market by making competitive technologies that set international standards,” the agency said. “We will continue to support such efforts so that the people can also feel at ease (in using hydrogen) by expanding the number of certified products and services that can guarantee safety,” it added.
