SEOUL: Dear President Lee Jae-myung,
I sincerely congratulate you on your election.
As someone who studied philosophy in the early 1980s and took part in the student movement, I am now a citizen in my mid-60s who has valued humanism and truth throughout my life. After graduating from university, I have lived as both a corporate employee and a small business owner, and I have come to deeply realize the importance of social equity and historical truth. In this regard, I would like to share a few wishes for the future of the Republic of Korea.
1. Restoration of Historical Truth
Modern Korean history is the result of countless sacrifices and struggles. Events like the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement are not merely past incidents, but mirrors reflecting our present and future. I urge you to stand firmly against any attempts to distort or conceal historical truths, including the remnants of pro-Japanese collaborators and the December 3rd coup. Please lead the way in building a history of reconciliation and unity grounded in truth.
2. Realization of Social Equality
Economic polarization and social inequality remain major issues in our society. Please help create a fair environment where small businesses and workers are treated justly. I hope you will strengthen policies to ensure that fundamental rights—such as education, healthcare, and housing—are equally guaranteed to all citizens.
3. Humanism-Based Policy
We need a humanistic approach that prioritizes human dignity and values. This means not merely pursuing economic growth, but focusing on improving the quality of life for the people. Please realize humanistic values in areas such as environmental protection (including RE100), strengthening labor rights, and respecting cultural diversity.
4. Leadership for Truth and Justice
Truth should never be distorted by power or ideology. Please formulate policies based on philosophical reflection and scientific evidence, and build trust through communication with the public. Uphold the law and institutions fairly for a just society, and listen attentively to the voices of the marginalized. Moreover, please establish a transparent personnel system that uncovers and appoints hidden talents.
5. Vision for Peace and Reunification
The division of the Korean Peninsula remains one of our greatest national tragedies. Please present a long-term vision for peaceful reunification and work to build trust between the North and South. Through military reduction and expanded civilian exchanges, I hope you will lay the foundation for lasting peace.
Mr. President,
The Republic of Korea must continue its journey toward truth and equality. I earnestly hope you will help build a society where every citizen can live a life of dignity. I, too, will contribute what little strength I have.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Hong Sang-il, a citizen of Korea
