Myanmar asks its people to build healthy community

YANGON, June 26 (Xinhua) — A Myanmar anti-drug official Tuesday called on the country’s people to make continuous efforts to build up a healthy community free of drug abuse.

Lieutenant-General Ko Ko, chairman of Myanmar’s Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and Home Minister, made the call in his message on the falling of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Tuesday, the theme of which for this year is “Global Actions for Healthy Communities without Drugs”.

Drug trafficking, once viewed largely as a social and criminal problem, has transformed in recent years into a major threat to the health and security of people and regions, he warned.

“Thanks to cooperation between international law enforcement agencies, drug trafficking gangs involved in transnational crimes could be arrested and punitive actions against them taken,” he said.

He disclosed that the government has intensified efforts to destroy poppy plantations and control drug traffickers, resulting in the fact that in 2011, it has punished 3,991 offenders  in connection with 2,617 drug-related cases.

As activities to mark this year’s international day against drug abuse, Myanmar held ceremonies on eradication of drug regionally and drug-destruction ceremonies in Yangon, Mandalay and Shan state’s capital of Taunggyi Tuesday.

Myanmar has been  carrying out drug eradication under its 15- year national plan (1999-2000 to 2013-14) in three five-year phases aimed at total drug elimination by 2014 and the year 2012 is the third year of Myanmar’s third five-year plan of drug elimination. <Xinhua>
