UAE to give Yemen food aid worth US$136 million

DUBAI, June 3 (Xinhua) — The president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan approved food aid worth 500 million Dirham (about 136 million U.S. dollars) to help the Yemeni people suffering from a year-long turmoil, local news agency WAM reported Sunday.

“The gesture is in line with the brotherly feelings towards the Yemeni people … so the population of that country would be able to overcome the situation and complete the new construction phase for better security, stability and prosperity,” the report said.

The money donated by the UAE shall be used to buy basic food items such as sugar, cooking oil, baby milk powder, canned food or rice.

On May 23, the United Nations said the Yemen’s food crisis reached a catastrophic level after half a million people were displaced in the country in the wake of the turmoil that broke out in early 2011 and ousted former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

UAE President has also ordered to provide assistance directly to the Yemeni people by establishing distribution outlets in different regions of that country so as the recipients can get the assistance speedily.

The UAE said with its help to Sanaa, it aims to express “full solidarity and support to the brotherly Yemeni people in development, economic prosperity and humanitarian sectors.”
