Floating Garbages On Yangtze River

Floating garbage collectors work on the Yangtze River in Zigui, central China’s Hubei Province, July 12, 2012. The garbage collectors working on the water surface to the west of the Three Gorges Dam are local fishermen wanting an extra income to support their families. They scoop out trash flushed from the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and send them to the riverside, where the garbages are then transferred to waste disposal plants. In summer, when the Yangtze River sees the largest floating trash accumulation of the year, a person can scoop up two to three cubic meters of wastes from the river at a time, said 62-year-old garbage collector Cui Yonggu. <Xinhua/Xiao Yijiu>
