Iran: Sarkozy’s defeat stems from foreign policy failure

TEHRAN — Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Tuesday that the result of French presidential election is an indication of people’s dissatisfaction with Nicolas Sarkozy’ s foreign policies.

Talking in his weekly press briefing, Mehmanparast said that Sarkozy’ policies toward the Middle East developments, the issues in Afghanistan, the interests of Iranian nation and his following the U.S. policies in the world led to French people’s “dissatisfaction.”

The Iranian spokesman expressed hope that, with the government change in France, the “wrong policies” of the former French government will be corrected.

There are considerable potentials for cooperation between Iran and France, he said , adding that the Islamic republic hopes, with the potential changes in the policies of the new government, the relations between Iran and France will improve.

According to the official IRNA news agency’s report on Monday, Mehmanparast expressed hope that the new French President- elect Francois Hollande would “revise the wrong policies of his country in the past.”

He said the history of Tehran-Paris relations has provided an apt condition for growing cooperation, hoping that a new chapter would be opened up in the two countries bilateral relations through the election of the new French president.

Hollande, representing the center-left Socialist party, beat rightist Nicholas Sarkozy in the presidential elections concluded Sunday.
