Women Beyond Borders: Borders May Separate Us, But Stories Bring Us Together
Creating opportunities for women from different backgrounds to share their voices

By Pirah Aijaz
Karachi: Women’s struggles are often viewed through the cultural, social, and economic realities of their societies. Yet, challenges are not limited to any one region or background. Across the world, women experience personal loss, financial hardship, gender discrimination, self-doubt, professional barriers, and environmental challenges, each shaped by their individual circumstances and experiences.
Women Beyond Borders, an initiative by Pakistan-based online social impact startup NOORI Consultancy, brings together 15 women from different countries to share the experiences that have challenged, changed, and strengthened them. Through this initiative, NOORI aims to amplify women’s voices, celebrate their diverse journeys, and create a space where their stories can inspire others across borders.
Rather than presenting resilience as a single, universal experience, the initiative brings together distinct journeys that show how women respond to challenges in different ways. Their stories offer a broader view of women’s lives across borders, highlighting not only the obstacles they face but also the choices, determination, and lessons that shape their paths forward.
Across the 15 stories, several common challenges emerge, including personal loss, financial hardship, gender discrimination, self-doubt, professional setbacks, and environmental concerns. Although these experiences differ, they reflect the many ways women navigate difficulties while building their lives, careers, and communities.
For some, the journey began with personal struggles. Dalvia Vilanculos from Mozambique faced the loss of her father and learned to advocate for herself in her professional life. Elizabeth Dwamena-Asare from Ghana worked to rebuild her confidence after experiencing body shaming, while Dildora Xojyozova from Uzbekistan continued pursuing her ambitions despite financial difficulties and criticism. Melisa Nemangwe from Zimbabwe transformed a painful experience from her teenage years into a commitment to advocating for girls’ rights. Gloria Wasingya Wa-Muchele from the Democratic Republic of the Congo draws strength from growing up in a country affected by conflict, believing that where a person comes from should never limit how far they can go.
Professional challenges also shaped many of these journeys. Stephanie Kituku from Kenya created her own path when expected employment opportunities did not materialize. Carlota Nzang from Equatorial Guinea used her language skills to support her education, while Hanifa Makunganya from Malawi worked through self-doubt as she pursued data science. Antónia Garcia from Angola navigated the demands of leadership, motherhood, and career development. Hillary Kituku from Kenya learned to manage workplace demands, deadlines, and client needs, while Peace Chineye Udeagbara from Nigeria embraced difficult career transitions and the challenge of starting over.
Other stories highlight the connection between individual determination and community change. Bidémi BIOKOU from Benin built a dried-fruit business using locally available produce and limited resources. Mercy Wanjiku Gichau from Kenya was inspired by the effects of climate change on communities and livelihoods to pursue environmental law. Vimbai Nhengu from Zimbabwe took action to restore her community’s land through indigenous tree planting. Miriam Chelangat from Kenya draws on her experiences of setbacks and self-doubt to strengthen her commitment to community development and disability advocacy.
Together, these experiences demonstrate that resilience takes different forms. For some women, it means rebuilding confidence or finding a new professional direction. For others, it involves creating a business, advocating for rights, or working towards environmental and social change. Their journeys remind us that progress does not follow a single path and that the lessons women gain from their experiences can extend beyond their individual lives to inspire and support others.
Founded by Pirah Aijaz, NOORI Consultancy works to advance women’s empowerment, digital inclusion, and personal and professional development. Through Women Beyond Borders, the organization continues this work by creating opportunities for women from different backgrounds to share their voices and learn from one another.
Ultimately, Women Beyond Borders is a reminder that although women’s circumstances and challenges vary, their stories deserve to be heard. By bringing these experiences together, the initiative encourages connection, understanding, and inspiration across geographical and cultural boundaries.
