Jeddah has been a traditional hub for commerce along the Red Sea and the port of entry for many Muslims traveling to Mecca to perform the religious obligations for the Hajj pilgrimage. Many Arab and African pilgrims years ago stayed in Jeddah, never returning to their home countries and many eventually melted into Saudi society.
