‘Be rude to your wife if you want to get a divorce’

“Sit properly! Where do you think you are that you are twisting your body around?”

This is one of the comments made by a judge during a hearing, addressing a person who was facing a certain charge in court.

In fact, the Seoul Bar Association said judges make it a habit of making rude comments even to lawyers.

“Do you want to know how to get a divorce? You can get this done by taking a woman you are having an affair with to your house and showing the worst kind of things to your wife,” one judge was quoted as telling a man who was seeking a divorce.

This was part of a report presented by the association concerning the 2,738 judges currently active in the country on their fairness, quality of verdicts and the manner in which they handle their cases, .

The compilation was made by 460 (among 9,128 lawyers in Seoul) and was a follow up to reports that have been filed annually since 2008.

The main problem that the lawyers pointed out was righteousness with which judges often approach cases.

In a case cited in the presentation, a judge was actually quoted as saying that he was throwing the case out because it is too difficult to rite up the ruling. <The Korea Times>
