AJA Chairman to Northeast Asian History Foundation

Kim Hak-joon

Kim Hak-joon, 69, a former chairman of the DongA Ilbo, was inaugurated Monday as president of the Northeast Asian History Foundation.

Kim studied political science at Seoul National University where he later taught, and got a doctor’s degree in the same subject science from the University of Pittsburg in Pennsylvania, the United States.

He started his career as a political journalist at the Chosun Ilbo. He became an elected member of the 12th National Assembly in 1988 where he served for three years. During President Roh Tae-woo’s administration, Kim worked for Cheong Wa Dae, and in 1996, he was made president of the University of Incheon. He became chairman of the DongA Ilbo in 2008.

Since June last year, he’s been a senior advisor to the paper, and a board member of Dankook University and the Asian Journalist Association.

The Northeast Asian History Foundation was founded in 2006, and is working to raise awareness of historical disputes in Northeast Asia, especially regarding the Dokdo islets. <The Korea Times/Kim Se-jeong>
