BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) — More than 982,932 cases of infectious diseases were reported on the Chinese mainland in May, resulting in 1,575 deaths, the Ministry of Health said Tuesday.

Most of the deaths, or 1,441 cases, were caused by Category B notifiable diseases. The five most frequently reported diseases last month included hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, dysentery and gonorrhea, according to a statement released by the ministry.

Infectious diseases are separated into three categories in China according to their severity.

No cases of SARS, human-communicable bird flu, polio or diphtheria were reported in the month. Seven cases of cholera — a Category A infectious disease — were reported, but none were fatal, according to the statement.

Category C infectious diseases left 134 people dead, among whom 132 were killed by hand-foot-mouth disease, the statement said. <Xinhua>
