50 Chinese couples wed on Jeju

A scenic joint wedding ceremony of 50 couples from Daqing in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China, was held at Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) on Jeju Island, Wednesday.

The wedding ceremony was planned by the Daqing People’s Broadcasting Station as a special event on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Korea.

It also celebrated the first year anniversary of the launch of Daqing’s live-broadcasting channel. The event was broadcast live in China.

The ceremony took off with a celebratory performance by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Dance Company and singer Bae Seul-gi.

It was followed by marriage vows and an exchange of wedding gifts. A representative among the couples gave a speech and the ceremony concluded with photo shoots.

Policemen also provided a spectacle, standing guard on horses throughout the ceremony.

Jeju Gov. Woo Geun-min conducted the wedding ceremony together with the president of Daqing Broadcasting and wished the newlyweds happy marriages. He said they were welcome to come back to Jeju on their future anniversaries.

The newly-married couples spent their honeymoon on Jeju, touring around the major attractions and will return to China today.

Jeju Island is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and was selected as one of the World’s Seven Wonders of Nature last year. It was also voted as the best honeymoon destination through an online survey by Travel Weekly, China’s representative travel magazine. <Korea Times/Kim Bo-eun>
