Young Victim of Chernobyl Being Entertained by Clown
MINSK, Belarus — A professional actor who plays as a clown accompanies a child at a scientific research medical center on children’s tumor and blood disease on the outskirts of Minsk, capital of Belarus, on April 19, 2012. Local actors and actresses come to the medical center every week to accompany those children who suffered from illness due to the Chernobyl disaster.
The Chernobyl disaster, the worst nuclear accident in history, occurred in April 1986, when a series of explosions occurred at the nuclear power plant, resulting in the destruction of the No. 4 reactor and the spread of radiation across Europe and former Soviet countries. Seventy percent of Chernobyl radioactive dust fell on the territory of Belarus and a total of 46,450 sq km of its territory was polluted by the disaster. Residents who live near the nuclear-polluted area are threatened by thyroid gland disease, leukemia, skin disease and low immunity. <Xinhua>
