Persian New Year’s Day celebrated
Persian New Year’s Day, Norooz, which fell on March 20 this year, was belatedly celebrated in Yangcheon Cultural Center, western Seoul, Thursday (March 29) amid attendance of Iranian Ambassador to Korea Ahmad Masoumifar, other foreign diplomatic envoy and residents in the region. The celebration, hosted by Iranian Embassy, was also to mark the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relationship between South Korea and Iran.
There was a mime show by Korean-Iran joint team and performances by Persian traditional musical instrument.
Norooz is a traditional festival to celebrate the New Year’s Day and the beginning of the spring which usually falls around March 21st. It is celebrated by Iranian as well as people in Central Asia, South Asia, Middle East region such as Azerbaijan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. That is why it is called by various names ㅡ Novruz, Nowrouz, Nooruz, Navruz, Nauroz and Nevruz.
It was also registered on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. The UN General Assembly recognized March 21st as the International Day of Norooz in 2010.
The celebration of Norooz traditionally begins with Chaharshanbeh Suri, a fire festival which begins in evening of the last Tuesday before Norooz. It goes on until the end of Sizdah Bedar ceremony continuing for thirteen days after the New Year’s Day. On the New Year’s Day, Iranians spend outdoor according to their tradition.
