Slovak scientists invent cloak of invisibility

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (Xinhua) — Slovak scientists have invented a device that can create the illusion of invisibility by hiding objects from a static magnetic field, researchers said Tuesday.

Although it was a team of Barcelona-based scientists who came up with the original idea, the three Slovaks from the Slovak Academy of Sciences were able to confirm it via experiments and create a magnetic invisible cloak.

The experiment was based on the fact that a specially designed cylindrical superconductor-ferromagnetic bilayer can act as a cloak against a static magnetic field.

“While the superconductor expels the magnetic field, the ferromagnetic material absorbs it. To make sure that the material used has the characteristics required, it needs to be cooled down to minus 195 degrees Celsius,” Fedor Gomory, a member of the research team, told a press conference.

The new device could be eventually used in advanced computer technology as well as where magnetic resonance machines are used in medicine. Research into the mysterious dark matter in the universe could also benefit from the new invention.
