Tehran: Iran claimed the title of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U-21 World Championship for the first time in its history after defeating Italy in an absorbing five-set contest in Bahrain.

The victory allowed them to improve on their bronze medal finish that they achieved when they joined the World Championship in 2007.

In the final match on Saturday evening, Iran eased past Italy 3-2 (17-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12) at Isa Sports City Hall in Riffa.

Brazil finished third by sweeping Russia 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-12).

The Iranians did not have a first-degree in the Asian volleyball until a few years ago. But since the recent success of Iran’s clubs in Asia with the involvement of Iranian, Argentinean, Italian and Polish coaches, the national men’s volleyball team of Iran was at the highest level in the world.

The victory of the Iranian volleyball team at the Bahrain Men’s U-21 World Championships boosts the success chances of the Iranian national volleyball team in the coming years.

Iran, China, Korea and hosts Bahrain were the only teams from Asia to have played in the finals this year.
