Students in Nepal appear for school graduation test

The School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination which is the final examination of high schools students in Nepal started from Tuesday. A total of 528,257 students are appearing for the examination. Out of the total number, there are 229,751 boys and 216,233 girls who will appear the exams as regular examinees. The remaining number of students will appear from the exempted groups who are appearing for the examination for a second time.

More than 1,748 examination centers have been set up around the country for the examination which is considered very important in life of every student.

According to the Examination Controller’s Office (ECO) more than 56,000 manpower have been mobilized for smooth maneuver of the examination.

Talking to Xinhua, Examination Controller Dilli Raman Rimal informed that new policies had been adopted from this year for smooth functioning of the exam that determines the future of thousands of young students.

“We have mobilized 14 joint-secretaries in all 14 districts of the country. Similarly, the Prinicipal of every school will also be the registrar of the examination,” Rimal informed adding that it would help the government in making the examination more systematic, disciplined and esteemed.

Similarly, Rimal also said that anyone who would be found guilty of action against the examination norms and values would be liable to severe punishment.

“We have mobilized every mechanism to avoid any forms of irregularities in the examination,” Rimal said.

The SLC examination began in Nepal in from 1933 AD. As per the education system in Nepal, students after their Grade 10 appear for the examination which will promote them into the higher secondary level where they can select their faculty of choice.

In 1933 A.D when the SLC Examination Board was first set up in Nepal, students had to travel all the way to Patna University and Kolkata University of India to participate in the examination.

Later, the responsibility of the examination came down to Nepal Government’s Central Examination Control Office which has been conducting the SLC examination.

Several irregularities had been recorded in last year’s SLC examination because of which more serious steps are being taken this year. More than 500 people including exam superintendents, invigilators and students were arrested for their involvement in irregularities and expelled. Such acts include, bribery, cheating, distributing question papers before the examination among others.

As per the Education Act, one adopting unfair means and breaking the exam code can be jailed for six months or fined up to 100,000 (some 1250 U.S. dollars) or both. <Xinhua/Punjita Pradhan>
