No. 67 – 8 May 2013
Dear friend,
Have you heard of the term “eco-humanist”? On May 3, Choi Jae-cheon, a professor of Ewha Womans University in the Division of Eco-science, founded a biodiversity foundation. The biodiversity foundation will play the role of a Korean branch of the “Jane Goodall Institute,” an international organization established by the world renowned primatologist Jane Goodall to further environment conservation and animal rights. Professor Choi, who once was an aspiring poet, entered the Department of Zoology at Seoul National University and began his career as a scientist and has continued to lead forward in his field while communicating with the masses. In 2005, he went to the Supreme Court as a witness to explain the matriarchal society of animals and even played an important role in the ruling to make Korea’s patriarchal family registry system unconstitutional. I have often called him an eco-humanist as he works relentlessly in his research of harmonious and balanced ecosystems and ways to realize such. Professor Choi himself seemed satisfied to be called an eco-humanist. I hope that many eco-humanists like Professor Choi can emerge not only in Korea, but in all countries throughout Asia. May 11 marks the six-month anniversary of The AsiaN‘s Arabic version. Even though only six months have passed since its launching, it has been reaching its readers through the providing of high quality information and in-depth insight through over 2,000 articles written by more than 100 journalists and columnists from about 20 countries. Among these articles, a portion has been translated into English and Korean to share with non-Arabic readers. I would like to send out a big round of applause to Mr. Ashraf Dali, Editor-in-chief of The AsiaN‘s Arabic version, Ms. Radwa Ashraf, Managing editor, and others for leading and nurturing The AsiaN‘s Arabic version. May 8, 2013 Sincerely, |
