No. 61 – 27 March 2013
Dear friend,
The 35 year-old Steve Chen of Taiwanese origin and his two friends, founders of the world’s greatest video-sharing website, YouTube, have become successful, spotlighted figures. Overcoming a brain tumor and turning down a large financial incentive to stay at Google, Chen left and founded his own internet company. He is an icon of passion and audacity. During Chosun Media’s 2013 Asian Leadership Conference luncheon on Tuesday (Mar. 26) at the Sheraton Grande Walkerhill in Seoul, his talks were overflowing with confidence and humor. The passage below is from the book YouTube Story, published by Ollim last year. “In a quiet forest, I lost my way and in front of me appeared two paths. One was big with the traces of cars that had passed by. The other was a trail covered thick with weeds. I chose the trail as there is no excitement following a path where the results can be predicted.” One of the statements Chen made toward the end of the conference stood out and rung in my ears. “Please let children have one day in the week away from their studies, where they can freely think and play to their heart’s content.” The AsiaN is waiting for the appearance of a second or third Steve Chen, who can open the future with imagination and creativity. We will be cheering for them. March 27, 2013 Sincerely, |
