No. 35 – 26 September 2012

Dear friend

Last week, one reader sent us the following message in response to the last week’s newsletter introducing Dennis Han’s artwork.

“I feel pained at not being able to go and see Dennis Han’s exhibition. I do visit Seoul from time to time, but am always pressed for time and end up rushing back to my home in Naro Island. I was very happy to hear about the inspiring life story of Dennis Han and his aunt and am very impressed by his ability to express the essence of beauty. The will of heaven and the will of people are different. Heaven’s will always has something good stored in it. This kind of beliefs might have led religion to press people for compliance. However, nothing is more difficult than faithfully complying with something. It is very difficult to be in compliance with one’s neighbors, superiors and parents. It is even more difficult when it comes to the compliance with God. Thus, I respect people leading a life of ascetic because they are living their lives to the fullest possible extent. Dennis Han’s aunt is considered as a person living an ascetic life through her artistic activities. That’s why she is beautiful.”

The message was from Hong Seung-soo, honorary professor of Seoul National University, who retired in 2009 after teaching astrology for more than 30 years in the university. He is currently working as the director of the National Youth Space Center.

The Chuseok, Full-Moon Festival, which falls on Sept. 30 (Aug. 15 by lunar calendar) is a major holiday for some Asian countries including Korea and China. During the holiday, I will try to contact friends, relatives and former teachers I have neglected due to busy schedule. I sincerely hope this upcoming holiday will be a warm and happy time for all of you.
