Indian Bollywood actor, Salman Khan, has been sentenced to 5 years in jail for killing a homeless man in a September 2002 hit-and-run case. An Indian court handed down the sentence to Khan on Wednesday.
Khan had been convicted of homicide for crashing his SUV into a group of homeless men, after a night out drinking, killing one and injuring others, and fleeing the scene in India’s entertainment capital, Mumbai.
The 49-year-old actor had blamed the accident on his driver. Even though his driver had testified that he was driving the car but the injured victims and a constable attached to Khan’s security testified it otherwise leading to Khan’s sentence.
Khan is one of Indian film industry’s biggest box office draws and has been responsible for some of the biggest blockbusters like ‘Dabangg’. This may be a shocking halt in the actor’s long career.
The news of his sentence has already affected the stocks of some of the biggest entertainment companies. A report by the Press of Trust of India said that more than $31 million were riding on the verdict of the actor, who had been signed to numerous films in the coming years.
