Children’s Theater Festival kicks off in Nepal

The third Children’s Theater Festival kicked off in Nepali capital Kathmandu on Friday, with Russian Writer Anton Checkov’s famous story Vanka adopted as a play in the inauguration.

The week-long theater festival was organized by Nepal’s Shailee Theater with the support of Russian Culture Center Nepal.

It aims to advocate child rights and help in the development of child psyche with the medium of theater.

Many children in Nepal are like Checkov’s Vanka who comes from the countryside and is forced to work in the town areas in houses, hotels and even as a conductor in public vehicle.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Shanta Das Manandhar, a veteran writer of the children literature in Nepal said that theater is very important for the development of a person and a society.

“This kind of children theater festival would prove very fruitful for a child as he is the future of the nation,” he said.

Director of the Russian Culture Center Stainslav Simakov said this kind of event will help for the overall development of children. “This will help children for their improved academic performances and their extra-curricular activities,” he said.

Mahesh Poudyal, the translator of the play Vanka, told Xinhua that the main aim of the festival is to make every child aware of their rights and improve their ability.

The festival will showcase different dramas and at the end evaluate and announce prizes for the best drama throughout the festival. <Xinhua>
