AJA takes part actively in campaign to end social discrimination in Nepal

KATHMANDU –  Asia Journalists Association (AJA-Nepal) is actively participating in the nation-wide social campaign launched to end the caste-based discrimination and untouchability in Nepal from Wednesday (Sept. 12).

Issuing a press statement, AJA vice chairman and AJA-Nepal Chapter chairman Bishnu Nisthuri said that his organization was a part of the campaign and  the AJA headquarters and the national chapters to the campaign had extended moral support to it.

“AJA believes that the national campaign launched to generate public awareness about the caste based discrimination in the coordination with the Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) should be a matter of concern of all citizens,” said the press statement. 

It further said that the prevalence of the discrimination was a serious human rights violation.

The campaign which began from Ilam in the east would reach Kanchanpur in the west before concluding in Nuwakot in the central development region. 

According to the press release, the campaign will last for 26 days covering an area of 5,000 km in the 36 of the 75 districts of Nepal.

The campaign includes rallies, cultural programmes, signature collection and honour of those who tied inter-caste nuptial knots, according to the statement.

AJA Nepal Chapter has urged all professional organizations, business communities and members of AJA-Nepal to actively participate in the campaign.

Altogether 39 organisations including AJA-Nepal are participanting in this national campaign.
