Survey result: Majority of Koreans view Lee’s visit to Dokdo positively

Some 26 percent of those polled to assess President Lee Myung-bak’s duty performance in the third week of August (13th – 17th) were learned to have assessed positively. It was 6 percent higher than that of the positive repliers in previous week, according to recent survey conducted by Gallup Korea.

The survey was aimed to know people’s reaction following President’s Lee’s sudden visit to Dokdo Islet on Aug. 10 and his subsequent demand for sincere apology by Japanese Emperor Akihito to those who were forced to serve as comfort women during the war. Most of the people queried were learned to have appraised Lee’s visit to the disputed islet as being appropriate.

However, it said, with regard to President Lee’s remarks on Japanese Emperor, 72 percent of those polled said it was appropriate while 19 percent viewed it inappropriate, the Gallup Korea said.

The survey also revealed that majority of those polled wanted the President to say what he has to say about Dokdo and past history  in dealing with Japan in the days to come even though it could deteriorate bilateral relationship between the two neighboring countries, it said.
