Malaysia, Russia discuss ways to strengthen bilateral ties
Vladivostok: Malaysia’s Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin have discussed ways to further strengthen ties between the two countries.
During the 30-minute meeting on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in the port city overlooking Golden Horn Bay, near the borders with China and North Korea, the two leaders also spoke about trade and innovation, Malaysian news agency BERNAMA reported.
Mahathir and Putin met last year on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit held in Singapore.
Malaysia and Russia have had “cordial diplomatic relations” for more than 50 years, the news agency said.
According to Russia’s Sputnik news agency, Dr Mahathir said that Malaysia is interested in receiving access to Russian technologies, including those in the space industry.
Malaysia, on its part, could help Russia boost its presence in South East Asia, the prime minister added.
Putin reportedly said that Malaysia was a priority partner of Russia in Asia.
“We are very happy that relations between our countries are developing in such a positive way,” Putin was quoted as saying.
The EEF, established by a decree by Putin in 2015 to support the economic development of Russia’s Far East, is being held on September 4-6.
The development of Russia’s Far East, including strengthening its economic and innovative potential and raising the living standards of its residents, is the country indisputable priority, Putin was quoted as saying by Forum organizer Roscongress Foundation.
The forum feature more than 70 events focusing on discussion of key issues in the world economy, regional integration, and the development of new industrial and technological sectors.
